Self-care and recovery.

One thing I get asked on a regular basis is, how do you overcome ‘bad’ days and I often get stuck answering this question. This is because I don’t have just one thing that helps me overcome those ‘bad’ days, I have several things.
However, sometimes I let those bad days take over, but what I’ve learnt is to not feel guilty for taking time to myself and this is because it’ll only make me feel worse. Having a bad day does not mean your going backwards, everyone on a journey to recovery has those days and it’s completely fine and understandable for this to happen, but it is important to remember, don’t let that bad day make all of the other days bad.

You CAN and WILL get through it!

Self-care

There are so many different things people can do to help relax themselves, some including;
  • Go for a walk
  • Exercise
  • Watch a film
  • Read a book
  • Pamper yourself
  • Have a hot bubble bath
  • Write down your thoughts & feelings
  • Colour in

I personally find going for a walk, having a hot bath and writing down my thoughts & feelings the most helpful. Going for a walk gives me time to ‘clear my head’ and it gives me time alone to gather my thoughts. Having a hot bath helps me relax and writing down my thoughts & feelings allows me to get them out of my head and put them onto paper.

Self-care is an essential part of recovery, making time for yourself is important!

If anyone is looking for proof that things do get better, here it is. I’ve had a bad few weeks with my mental health and yes, I may have let it get the better of me for a few weeks but now I’m more determined than ever to get back to where I was before this relapse. The last few weeks I’ve not done much apart from stay in bed for days, lie on the couch all day, eat food and watch TV but that’s okay.
Taking time to yourself sometimes does the world of good!

If you want to carry on your journey to recovery self-care is important, not beating yourself up about how your feeling is important and getting back up after a relapse shows how strong of an individual you are!

  3. I love this post! I have a few of the same self care activities. I love a good pamper moment where I put on a facemask to make my face feel fresh. It's the little things that keep us sane!!

  5. Posts like this is so important, so thank you for sharing. I always try a do a little self-care a day, even if it's eating a bowl of fruit. I used to always push myself and make myself try and work through those bad days, but that just makes everything worse. I've learnt it's okay to take days off, and not to listen to judgement from anyone. I will always know best on how to take care of myself.

    1. You are definitely right. You are the one who knows your body best and if you just need to take a day or even a week to yourself, that is completely fine! Looking after yourself is the most important thing.
      Keep going lovely x
